Self-Love Affirmations for Loving Yourself (and How to Use Them)

Self-love affirmations are short, kind sentences you say or read to yourself to change how you talk to yourself. They work best when they feel true, or almost true, for you right now. Below you’ll find 27 positive self-love affirmations grouped by theme, from affirmations for loving yourself and your body to affirmations for self-acceptance and healing, plus how to use them so they actually help and a free self-love affirmations PDF with the full list.

I was once in your place: shy, awkward and alone. I kept working on my self-esteem, went through many bad relationships and felt heartbroken and sad. Over time, I learned from those experiences, and I put this list together for anyone who’s at that point now.

A quick note: I’m not a psychologist or therapist. Affirmations are a small daily tool, not a treatment. If low self-esteem or low mood is affecting your daily life, please talk to a doctor or therapist.

Signs you could use more self-love

Low self-love often hides in everyday habits. You may find it hard to accept a compliment, or you may judge yourself much more harshly than you would judge a friend. If your sense of worth depends on how others treat you, that’s a sign too. You might recognize some of these:

  • You’re very sensitive to criticism.
  • You feel that nothing you do is good enough.
  • You find it hard to share your opinion.
  • Every mistake feels shameful.
  • You assume people don’t like you.
  • You change how you act around others so they’ll accept you.
  • You stay around people who make you feel small.
  • You pull away from social life and feel unloved.
If you sometimes wish you could disappear, or have thoughts of not wanting to be here, please reach out to someone now rather than relying on affirmations. In the US, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Elsewhere, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line in your country.

How affirmations for self-love and confidence actually work

Affirmations aren’t magic, and repeating a sentence you don’t believe can backfire. In a well-known 2009 study, people with low self-esteem who repeated the broad statement “I’m a lovable person” ended up feeling worse, not better (Wood, Perunovic & Lee, via National Geographic). When a sentence clashes too strongly with how you see yourself, your mind pushes back.

What tends to help more is a gentler, more specific approach. Research on self-affirmation suggests that reminding yourself of the things you value, and of real moments that support who you want to be, can make it easier to face difficult feedback without falling apart (Cohen & Sherman, 2014). So the goal isn’t to convince yourself of something big overnight. It’s to pick sentences that feel almost true and let them grow on you.

How to use self-love affirmations and mantras

Start with where you’re hardest on yourself. Take a few minutes to notice the areas where your inner voice is harshest: your body, your work, your relationships, your mistakes. Write them down. These are the places where affirmations can do the most good.

Pick three to five, or write your own. Choose affirmations or short self-love mantras that match those areas and feel true, or almost true. If none fit, write your own, and keep them specific and believable. “I handled a hard conversation well this week” can do more than “I’m amazing at everything.”

Keep them where you’ll see them. Read them once or twice a day, ideally at the same moments, like with your morning coffee or before bed. A note on your mirror or phone works better than a list you never open.

Notice the “yes, but.” If an affirmation brings up a quick “yes, but…”, write that thought down too. It often shows you what you’re really struggling with, and it’s a good place to start a journal entry or a self-esteem worksheet.

Look back every few weeks. Swap out sentences that no longer mean anything, and notice what has changed. Small shifts, like being a little less harsh after a mistake, are real progress.

Self-love affirmations: FAQs

Do self-love affirmations really work?

They can, if you use them in a way that fits where you are. Research suggests that sentences you can’t believe yet may make you feel worse, while specific, believable ones and reminders of what you value tend to help more. Think of affirmations as a small daily habit, not a quick fix.

How often should I say them?

Once or twice a day is enough for most people. Consistency matters more than repetition, so pick moments you won’t forget, like morning coffee or brushing your teeth.

What if an affirmation doesn’t feel true?

Skip it for now, or make it smaller. “I’m learning to accept my body” may feel more honest than “I love my body,” and that makes it more useful.

Can I write my own affirmations?

Yes, and they often work best. Keep them short, in the present tense and specific to your life. Base them on real things you’ve done or values you care about.

Is there a printable version?

Yes. You can get the full list of 101 affirmations as a free PDF by signing up below this post, or buy the printable affirmation cards if you’d like them as ready-to-cut cards.
